Andrew Jackson, 7th President of the United States. Born on March 15, 1767 in the Waxhaw Settlement in South Carolina; though just a boy, participated in the battle of Hanging Rock during the Revolution, captured by the British and imprisoned. The Central Canal waterway project was designed to link the Wabash and Erie Canal with cities throughout Indiana and Ohio. Construction began in 1836 but by the end of the decade the project was stopped due to fraud, and financial panic. John Tipton (1786-1839) served in the army under William Henry Harrison and rose through the ranks to become a brigadier general. Originally from Tennessee, John Tipton and his family moved to Harrison County, Indiana in 1807. Tipton was active in territorial government, served as a militia officer, politician, Indian agent, and land speculator. In March, 1823, he was appointed Indian agent at Fort Wayne and served as a commissioner to negotiate a treaty with the Miami and Pottawatomie in 1826.
